FaT Kakes was conceived in the office of our current job about 2 1/2 years ago, when I decided to make a cake for Tasha's potluck birthday celebration. Typically our office potlucks consisted of one of Tasha's tasty homemade desserts. Since it was her birthday, I decided that I would let her have a break and make her a cake. She said that carrot cake is her favorite, so I asked her for her recipe, after a little coxing I got the bulk of the family recipe. Mind you, up until this point any cake I had made had come from a box, and still was not that great. After making her cake, we both discussed how much we enjoyed baking, the nostalgia you get when smelling a fresh baked Red Velvet cake or pound cake just reminds us of family! After all several of our recipe's have been passed down for generations and had been guarded like Fort Knox, only to be pulled out for holidays and special occasions when everyone sits and talks for hours and get so stuffed someone is bound to end up falling asleep on the sofa. The satisfying sounds of "mmmm" and "girl you put your foot in this cake" are also great reminders that you have created something memorable.
Needless to say I was hooked after baking my first cake! I was ready to try more recipes and with Tasha's coaching and a husband that loves being a taste tester I was set. After many successful cakes, we had our Aha moment. This could be the start of something BIG, up until that point we mainly dreamed of winning the lottery. Could Fat Kakes become a reality?
Fastforward to January of this year (2013), we received a notice that we were going to be laid off, so we began to take the idea of starting our own business a little more seriously. Why not take a leap of faith, we were already being requested to make cakes for bake sales and celebrations. So in June 2013, out of our passion for baking and need for independence Fat Kakes was birthed - specializing in Homemade Goodness!
